THE CHICKS HAVE ARRIVED AND ARE THRIVING!

Norway spruce grow relatively slowly in the first 10 yrs of planting. It takes 8-11 yrs for it to reach 6-7 foot. In the US, Norway spruce don’t grow more than 130 ft tall; but in Europe it will reach a height of 130-215 feet tall. Masha’Allah.

EGYPT

This past winter, Zaid went to Egypt to visit the Batea and Hurriah Farms and to conduct business in the export of organic herbs to the United States. These farms are owned and operated by the family of workers that come to Norwich Meadows Farm for our summer/fall season.

During this time, Zaid also attended the BioFach Trade Show in Nuremberg, Germany. BioFach is the largest organic trade show in the world. It is here organic farmers from around the world gather to promote and make contact with each other in a global effort to increase the ever expanding markets for organic products.

We invite all to browse through these photos, which were taken during the month of February, 2010, to see the operation and beautiful land of our”sister” farms in Egypt.

PURPLE KOHLRABI

Root vegetables are top of the heap when it comes to nature’s weirder bounty.  And now – with the fall season well underway — they’re beginning to make their debuts at farmers markets throughout the city.  Pug-like celeriac, bulbous Jerusalem  artichokes and other strange-looking root vegetables can be spotted at many farm stands.  Ever heard of or seen purple kohlrabi?  This unusual vegetable looks like a purple turnip with tentacles.  The “alien turnips” were going for $2 a pound at the Norwich Meadows farm stand at the Union Square Greenmarket on Saturday.
